Peter Joli Wilson – Surf Photographer

Over the years, veteran surf photographer Peter Joli has seen it all through his lens. But witnessing blind surfer Matt successfully riding the terrifying waves of Nazaré is something he’ll never forget.

Watching Matt surf here is one of the most inspiring things that I’ve seen in surfing. For him to be totally blind, and to be out there, with a good team but just taking on 30-to-40-foot waves, it’s totally inspiring. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Peter Joli

Peter sees surfing Nazaré as a team sport, believing the talents of the safety and support crews to be just as impressive.

I’m watching the line-up all day when I’m shooting, and I watch the people rescuing or picking up the surfers in the water after they’ve ridden waves as big as houses. They’re in there on skis, on the right equipment, and with the right knowledge of how to pick somebody up, swing them onto the sled, pull them out of the impact zone - the safety team is incredible.”
