Loraine and Don Formston – Matt’s Parents

Blind surfer Matt Formston’s journey to Nazaré all started with parents Loraine and Don, who instilled a “never say die” attitude in him as a child. At an early age, Matt was told he couldn’t play sports by teachers and professionals. Matt’s parents didn’t take their word for it and encouraged him to believe he was no different to his peers. This attitude kept Matt in mainstream education against teachers’ advice, and it encouraged him to pursue a sporting career.

Probably three words. You could say he was fearless, he was brave or he was mad!... he had a degree of freedom as a child, to develop his own confidence."
Don Formston

In other words, Matt’s parents created the conditions for him to thrive. Growing up by the ocean at Narrabeen Lake, he was encouraged to always find a way forward, to know he was supported, and to believe that he could do anything. This conditioning and constant guidance was the start of the Nazaré journey, sowing early seeds for Matt to conquer the seemingly impossible.
