Insurance Advisernet Supporting the Australian Men’s Shed Association
Recently, the Insurance Advisernet Foundation and Everest Risk Group made a donation of $50,000 to the Australian Men’s Shed Association (AMSA), a non-profit organisation operating out of Newcastle. Having spoken passionately about the work being performed by AMSA, the Foundation was elated to once again be able to assist in the continued running of the AMSA program.
AMSA was established in 2007 by the Australian independent community-based Men’s Sheds as a body to represent, support and promote the continued Men’s Shed movement. It was founded on the principle of sharing information between Sheds and those communities wishing to establish and operate a Men’s Shed. AMSA provides practical support to Men’s Sheds, delivering a wide range of services with the aim of improving the health and wellbeing of members to reduce the number of men who are at risk from preventable health issues which may emanate from isolation. The Australian Men’s Shed Association prioritises the well-being of all men by providing a safe, friendly, and welcoming place for men to work on meaningful projects and to contribute to the wider community.
AMSA endeavours to always address the needs of Men’s Sheds and is grateful for the donation which ‘Will help provide further resources for the benefit of Shedders Australia wide’.
On hand to receive the cheque from IA Chairman Ian Carr, MD Shaun Standfield, AR Sean McDermott & AR Anthony Anastasio (from IA Corporate Authorised Representative, Everest Risk Group), were Melissa White (Member Manager) & David Helmers (Executive Officer)
Having started in Australia, the Men’s Shed movement is becoming a worldwide phenomenon as more people are appreciating the invaluable impact on society those older members of the community can have. Being an inclusive environment, it’s not unusual to see people of all ages working on theirs; the Sheds; and, the communities’ projects in a supportive environment.
The Australian Men’s Shed Association (AMSA) is the peak body supporting almost 1000 Men’s Sheds and is recognised as one of Australia’s largest male-based community development organisations.
McDermott said “Getting to know so many of these Shedders over the past eight years and listening to their stories; of where they are now and where they have come from, has been at times heart wrenching; however, always inspirational. There is something humbling and satisfying in being able to provide to such a good cause, knowing the work AMSA does to help the Shedders and conversely the work the Shedders do for the community.”
