Cyclone Alfred March 2025 'Worst Cyclone Since Tracy'

9 March 2025, Cyclone Alfred struck communities in Queensland & New South Wales with devastating force, including one death is described as the most costly storm since Cyclone Tracy in 1974.

The severe weather, with wind speeds of over 230 km/h and subsequent flooding from Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred started 4 March 2025 and continued until 31 March 2025, leaving a trail of destruction across QLD & NSW communities.

Thousands of homes, farms, crops, businesses and cars were damaged or impacted, with projected costs of up to $3 Billion, including $1.7 Billion in insurance claims.

The Impact of Cyclone Alfred

In addition to physical damage to thousands of homes and businesses from wind and rain, many communities were cut off and significant power outages resulting in loss of stock and contents.

Record Number of Insurance Claims

In what can only be described as a colossal response, insurers have reported that over 95,100 residential, commercial, and motor vehicle claims have been lodged, making Cyclone Alfred one of the most costly (estimated $1.3 Billion in claims) and far-reaching natural disasters in Australia's history.

Insurance Industry Response

Insurers have been working around the clock to process claims and assist affected policyholders. The sheer volume of claims has presented a significant staffing and resources challenge for the insurance industry, to focused on providing timely support to those in need.

In addition, insurers are collaborating with local authorities and emergency services to expedite recovery efforts and ensure that policyholders receive the help they need.

The Road to Recovery

While the immediate priority for affected communities is safety, recovery efforts will take months, if not years, to fully address the widespread damage caused by Cyclone Alfred. The government has pledged support, including disaster relief funds and emergency assistance packages, to help those affected by the cyclone.
