Does Your Charity or Community Group Have the Right Cover

Does Your Charity or Community Group Have the Right Cover

Whether you run a sporting club, charity or local community organisation, your focus is usually on the people you support and the activities you deliver.

But managing an organisation also brings responsibilities. Volunteers can be injured, visitors may suffer an accident, equipment can be damaged and committee decisions can lead to complaints or claims.

Insurance can help manage some of these financial risks, provided the cover reflects what your organisation actually does.

Start with your activities and people

Consider where your activities take place, who participates and whether you employ staff or rely on volunteers.

A small community group running monthly meetings will have different risks from a sporting club, charity providing professional services or organisation hosting large public events.

Before arranging cover, check whether your state or national association, funding agreement, venue hire contract or other arrangement has specific insurance requirements.

What insurance might you need?

Public Liability: May cover legal liability if your organisation's activities cause injury to another person or damage to their property. Check that your activities, events and locations are included.

Volunteer Personal Accident: Can provide specified benefits if an insured volunteer is injured while undertaking covered activities. It is different from Public Liability insurance and doesn't necessarily replace lost income or cover every medical expense.

Association Liability: May help protect the organisation and insured committee members against certain claims arising from management decisions or alleged wrongful acts. Depending on the policy, additional sections may cover employment-related claims or specified dishonest acts.

Professional Indemnity: May be relevant if your organisation provides professional advice, counselling, coaching or other services where an error could result in a claim.

Property and Equipment: Can cover insured buildings, contents, sporting equipment and other assets against specified loss or damage.

Cyber Insurance: May help with certain costs arising from data breaches, cyber incidents or business interruption. Fraudulent transfers and social engineering cover should be checked separately.

If you employ staff, Workers' Compensation requirements also need to be considered under your state or territory scheme.

Does incorporation change your insurance needs?

Incorporation generally creates a separate legal entity and can limit members' personal liability. However, it doesn't remove every personal responsibility of committee members or replace appropriate insurance.

Requirements and responsibilities differ by jurisdiction and organisational structure.

Review your cover when you introduce new activities, recruit staff, host larger events, acquire equipment or change premises.

Speak with your Insurance Advisernet adviser about your organisation's activities, people, contracts and assets so you can review the insurance that may be appropriate.
